Dyslexia Teaching Centre

Maths Assessment

Many children have difficulties with maths for a range of reasons.  They may suffer from 'maths anxiety', lack motivation or can not thrive because of personal circumstances. There may be gaps in maths learning because of inappropriate teaching methods or a child has fallen behind due to the pace of the maths teaching.

Maths and dyslexia

Many children with dyslexia also have difficulties with maths because of weaknesses in the cognitive skills associated with dyslexia. A weakness in language skills, for instance.
If you child is having difficulties with maths, an assessment may be appropriate.
Maths skills are not typically assessed as part of the full, diagnostic dyslexia assessment.
You can request a stand alone maths assessment, however, as difficulties with maths often co-occur with dyslexia, we recommend that your child has a dyslexia assessment first, which will investigate underlying cognitive skills associated with maths, such as working memory and processing speed.

If your child is being assessed for dyslexia, we recommend that a maths assessment is scheduled for a different day.  A full diagnostic assessment and a maths assessment would be a long day for a child.
If your child has already been diagnosed with dyslexia but you would like a further maths assessment with us, please send us the previous assessment report which will support our understanding of your child's maths difficulties.

What happens in a Maths assessment

A Maths assessment will explore:
  • retrieval, numeric and spatial memory
  • perceptual estimation skills
  • linguistic math concepts
  • core number sense development
  • mathematical vocabulary
  • mathematical reasoning & problem solving
  • estimation skills

A maths assessment approximately 2 hours to complete at our quiet centre in Kensington square.

The assessment report

A detailed report will be provided within three weeks of the assessment.  The report will include:
  • an introductory section which summarises your child's cognitive profile, their strengths and the impact any cognitive difficulties may have on their learning.
  • a summary of background information provided by home and school
  • detailed interpretation of test results.
  • personal recommendations for support at home and in the classroom.

A Maths Assessment costs £375

Pre-assessment information we will need

For all assessments, we will ask you to complete a Family Questionnaire, which must be completed with accurate information and as much detail as possible.  Pre-assessment information gathering is a key part of the process, which provides valuable information to inform the assessment.
We will also ask your child's school to complete a School Questionnaire, which we will send directly to the school.  We will also request any previous reports conducted by professionals (e.g. Occupational Therapy reports).
